Self Portrait: Portrait of My Father, Manuel Fernandez
2006
18 x 24 in. (45.72 x 60.96 cm)
Carlee Fernandez (Santa Ana, California, 1973 - ) Primary
Degrees of Separation: Contemporary Photography from the Permanent Collection (2010-2011)
This diptych initiated a series of works in which Carlee Fernandez investigated self-portraiture, identity, and gender by photographing herself posing as men who have been influential to her. The image on the right is a family photograph of the artist’s father at age nineteen taken by the artist's mother. The image on the left looks very similar, but is in fact a photograph of the artist disguised as her father, photographed in the same Los Angeles location many years after the original was taken. Fernandez dressed in similar clothing, styled her hair similarly, and emulated every detail except his mustache. This artwork may be seen as an homage to the artist's father—a way of empathizing with him and seeing the world through his eyes by temporarily assuming his identity.
Degrees of Separation: Contemporary Photography from the Permanent Collection, July 22, 2010 - March 13, 2011, New Wing, Second Floor, North Gallery, San José Museum of Art.
